About Thirsk
A Market Town in the Vale of York

Thirsk attracts large crowds to its racecourse on about a dozen days each year and a steady flow of about 1500 visitors each week to the 'World of James Herriot'. It has a busy Market Place, with markets on Saturdays and Mondays (bank holiday Monday markets are well worth a visit).

St. Mary's Church is one of the finest parish churches in Yorkshire and is mainly as it was built 500 years ago. Cod Beck is a small river which meanders through the town, with pleasant walks for a good distance along either bank.

St. Mary's Church Thirsk

Thirsk is ideally placed in the Vale of York, as a centre for touring the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors; true 'Herriot Country'. It has good road communications in all directions, and is on the main East Coast rail route. Because of this, it has attracted several businesses to its flourishing industrial park over the last 15 years, and the population has risen accordingly, but without detracting from the high quality of life.
